– When it comes to masks, this much is about a meter.
00:04
This much is about a millimeter.
00:06
When we talk about masks, we have to talk about microns.
00:09
And typically, if you look at an N95 mask,
00:12
what that does, is it filters out 95% of particulate matter
00:17
larger than .3 microns.
00:19
Well, the question then is how big is a COVID particle?
00:24
And a COVID particle is about .1 micron.
00:27
So we know that even an N95 mask
00:31
has tremendous limitations.
00:33
Yes, it does help some, because COVID particles will,
00:37
if you’ll will, coalesce and coagulate
00:39
almost as they come into the magnetized
00:42
or electrified field of the N95 mask.
00:45
But the bottom line is a surgical mask or a cloth mask
00:49
are really designed only for particulate matter
00:51
greater than five microns.
00:53
Typical bacteria are one to 20 microns.
00:56
So when we wear surgical masks in surgery,
00:59
we’re simply trying to make sure that if we sneeze,
01:01
cough, or something, we’re not spraying
01:03
a lot of bacteria into the place we’re doing surgery.
01:07
But this idea of people thinking
01:08
that they’re doing something particularly useful
01:11
with a cotton mask or a handkerchief
01:13
or a homemade mask or a surgical mask
01:15
is just looney tunes.
