Dr. Sam Bailey, MD: What the Covid PCR test actually tests for, and why it’s so inaccurate

Dr. Sam Bailey explains what the COVID-19 PCR test actually test for (hint: It’s not the virus) and why it is so inaccurate. The PCR test is a diagnostic test, not a screening test.

00:00
hey guys my name is dr sam today i
00:02
wanted to give you an update about what
00:04
is going on
00:05
right now in new zealand in regards to
00:07
covert 19.
00:08
i also wanted to talk a little bit about
00:10
the pcr test
00:11
in vaccines now as per my last video on
00:14
social distancing i am not being paid to
00:16
talk about this and what i’m going to
00:18
say is just my personal opinion
00:20
this is such a polarizing topic and can
00:22
make a lot of people feel
00:24
really angry or upset so of course do
00:27
your own
00:27
research so that you can reach your own
00:30
decision
00:31
i will link any references that i’ve
00:32
used in the description
00:37
in my home country new zealand when the
00:40
government
00:40
sends an emergency alert to your mobile
00:44
phone about a lockdown this is what it
00:47
sounds like
00:50
[Applause]
00:54
if that doesn’t put the fear of god into
00:56
you i don’t know what else will
00:58
in actual fact in the beginning of the
01:00
epidemic we had one of the world’s
01:03
strictest lockdowns for four weeks
01:05
because we needed to
01:07
flatten the curve new zealand public
01:09
health advisors
01:10
admitted that we are all taking part in
01:13
an experiment
01:14
and it’s hard to know what might happen
01:17
soon enough the goal became to
01:19
eliminate the virus entirely
01:24
now up until recently lots of
01:26
international media have been praising
01:28
the new zealand government
01:29
on their success of a hundred days with
01:31
no community transmission
01:33
of course from the outside people want
01:35
to know how did this happen
01:38
this is where it gets interesting i
01:40
wanted to go over
01:41
the community testing procedure prior to
01:44
august
01:45
essentially to get a covert 19 pcrts
01:48
done in the community
01:49
you had to have symptoms plus be at risk
01:52
of having caught the infection
01:54
so symptoms being defined as having a
01:57
new respiratory infection
01:58
plus or minus a fever plus another
02:01
symptom like new or worsening cough
02:03
sore throat shortness of breath runny
02:06
nose
02:06
or loss of smell i won’t bore you
02:10
with the details of what it means to be
02:11
at risk but all the expected stuff like
02:14
recent overseas travel in the last two
02:17
weeks etc etc
02:18
the key point here is you had to have
02:21
symptoms now why
02:23
is this important
02:26
there is no way this paper could work
02:31
paper you will always feel secure tune
02:33
in next time on what this muppet lab’s
02:35
new answer to the energy crisis
02:37
flammable water that’s all for now
02:43
there is a fundamental concept in
02:45
medicine which is called
02:47
pre-test probability and this was
02:50
tattooed into my brain at medical school
02:53
and in simple terms pre-test probability
02:55
is the chance of a patient having the
02:57
target disease before the diagnostic
03:00
test result is known
03:01
so for example you don’t test for
03:03
pregnancy in men
03:05
because the chance of a biological man
03:07
being pregnant is zero
03:09
all tests have a possibility of
03:10
reporting a false positive or a false
03:13
negative and if your pre-test
03:15
probability is low
03:17
you are more likely to get high false
03:19
positives and false negative results
03:21
so what does this mean for the covert 19
03:24
pcr test
03:25
as many of you already know there are
03:27
major problems with this
03:29
diagnostic test in that it doesn’t test
03:32
for
03:32
the virus it tests for a piece of
03:34
genetic material that we don’t know
03:37
the significance of the pcr test has
03:40
never been compared
03:41
to a gold standard because there is none
03:44
for covert 19 and that in itself
03:46
makes interpreting the accuracy
03:49
of positive and negative results very
03:51
problematic i’m not going to talk about
03:53
this in detail as other youtubers have
03:55
already covered this topic
03:56
much better than i can but let me play
04:00
devil’s advocate and assume for
04:02
argument’s sake that this pcr test
04:04
is scientifically sound the pcr test is
04:07
supposed to be used
04:08
as a diagnostic test not as a screening
04:11
test and the difference between a
04:13
diagnostic test
04:14
and a screening test is that patients
04:15
that undergo screening
04:17
do not have symptoms what did you say
04:21
now you might think but lots of people
04:23
have tested positive for covert 19 who
04:26
don’t have symptoms
04:28
exactly how can one interpret this
04:31
it’s because medical staff are testing
04:33
people inappropriately
04:35
you can’t use a diagnostic test as a
04:37
screening test
04:42
right from may to the beginning of
04:45
august in new zealand
04:47
community testing stations started
04:49
closing down and people
04:51
went back to normal with shops opening
04:53
people going back to work
04:55
fewer people social distancing and even
04:57
smaller numbers wearing masks
04:58
but then something changed in august
05:02
all of a sudden cobit community testing
05:04
stations were opening up again
05:06
with money available to start
05:08
surveillance testing
05:09
this rolled out across the country with
05:11
pop-up testing centres
05:13
looking to test people without symptoms
05:16
soon enough there were four new cases in
05:19
auckland
05:20
from an unknown source on the 11th of
05:22
august
05:23
and then all hal broke loose and
05:25
auckland was put
05:26
into level 3 lockdown while the rest of
05:28
the country went up to level 2.
05:31
masks are now mandatory for passengers
05:33
on public transport
05:34
and most importantly there was a change
05:37
from the ministry on how
05:39
community testing is being done which
05:41
was that
05:43
asymptomatic people are now being made
05:45
to have covert pcr tests
05:47
inconceivable like i said before the pcr
05:50
test is not a screening test and should
05:53
not be used as one
05:55
right onto vaccines
06:00
again i do not wish to tell you what to
06:02
do or what not to do in regards to the
06:05
question of getting a coronavirus
06:06
vaccine
06:07
that should be entirely your own choice
06:10
personally i’ve had
06:11
all my own childhood vaccinations and
06:13
travel vaccines in the past
06:15
but i will not be getting the
06:17
coronavirus vaccine in the future
06:20
and my reasoning for this is firstly
06:22
that vaccines take a very long time to
06:24
make and it’s likely this epidemic will
06:26
have finished by the time one reaches
06:28
the market
06:29
the shortest length of time to make a
06:32
vaccine and history was
06:34
four years for months and that was
06:36
pushed out in record time
06:38
secondly seasonal vaccines do not reduce
06:40
deaths in winter
06:42
in the elderly obviously i’m not elderly
06:45
but there was a very good large study
06:46
done back in 2005 that concluded that
06:49
giving
06:49
flu vaccinations to people aged 45 to 74
06:53
years does not prevent them dying from
06:55
the flu
06:56
overall my main issue against
06:58
vaccinations is that i do not believe
07:00
they should ever be compulsory
07:03
or required in order for someone to seek
07:05
employment
07:06
gain an education or to travel
07:08
coronaviruses and
07:10
influenza viruses are similar and that
07:12
they are both seasonal
07:13
but i’m far more likely to die from
07:16
poisoning or a car accident at my age
07:19
than from covert 19. can you believe
07:22
that after nine months of the pandemic
07:25
something like 0.01
07:29
of the world’s population has died from
07:31
covert 19
07:32
and these numbers include cases where
07:34
people died with covert rather than
07:36
causally because of covert
07:38
when you compare this to the spanish flu
07:40
which killed 2 to 2.5 percent of the
07:43
world’s population
07:44
the fatality rate is far smaller as
07:46
