Margaret Keays joins us today from Mexico. Margaret was born in Poland, immigrated to Canada some years ago but then relocated to Mexico where she operates an online business helping those interested in relocating to do the same. As someone who has uprooted her life not once, but twice, she shares her insights for those interested on escaping what Canada is becoming.
On the Lifestyle of Living in Mexico…
For people who really don’t know Mexico too well and are unsure, find an Airbnb – land in a place like that and start adjusting yourself to the new culture, to the climate and just settle in and rest after doing that…living in a gated ex-pat community, where you may never even need to learn Spanish because everybody around you speaks English. Moving to another country can be a little traumatic. So, take care of yourself first. If you’ve watched Hollywood movies that were suggesting that Mexico is unsafe and that’s where you will be safe, you can rent the place for a month in a gated community. And believe me, Mexico is much safer than we think, there are things that have happened here but the stories are greatly exaggerated through stories that we’ve heard through the media and Hollywood production…I feel completely safe, but I’m very watchful and aware of my surroundings.
On How to Know If Emigrating is for You….
This was not my first relocation, I originally come from Poland…I left at the age of 26 and this was my second great relocation. The number one thing that you need to consider when you’re thinking of such a huge leap is to take care of your perception of what you’re doing. Make sure you don’t fall into an overwhelm. It happens quite often because of a perception of something that either you don’t have enough information or there are so many unknowns that your brain literally gets jammed. So, the checklist will be first of all, take care of your wellbeing, make a list of things that you need to do, especially around your assets that you have in Canada. If you wish to completely cut ties with your old country, you can do so by removing all the connections that you have to bank accounts, sell your assets. If you own companies, sell the company. As you take care of that, start thinking about the residency process…
