President of the JCCF, John Carpay has been pursuing many provincial governments across Canada to provide justification for their emergency measures. The firm has been retained by the Truckers of the Freedom Convoy demonstrating in Ottawa the peoples’ opposition to the mandates across Canada.  John speaks to the situation in there; the Ottawa Police as well as other actions that are transpiring.

On our government’s role in escalation…

What’s happening in Ottawa right now is terrifying. I fear where things are heading, but it appears right now that the Ottawa police are moving into massive arrests, arrests and large numbers of truckers. Their pretext is that the truckers are somehow violating Section 430 of the Criminal Code, which has an offense that’s called Mischief that makes it illegal to destroy or damage property. It also makes it illegal to interfere with the lawful use and enjoyment of property, etc. Now, the truckers probably are committing some traffic violations, municipal bylaw illegal parking and if the Ottawa police want to issue tickets for a parking infraction or a traffic offense, they have the right to do that.

On how un-Canadian and tyrannical this is…

That is what I would expect from some banana republic we used to refer to these Latin American dictatorships. We call them banana republics. The idea was they grow bananas, but they have a dictator. They don’t have democracy; they don’t have human rights. They don’t have freedom. Police can just arrest you and throw you in jail. Canada’s turning into a Northern banana republic. When you’ve got the police that want to take parking infractions or traffic tickets and pretend and act as though that is a criminal offense and then arrest people and handcuff people and lock people up…for committing a crime when the best that the police could hope for is that they’re guilty of a traffic infraction. This is really scary and I hope this will not happen.

On how the Ottawa Police Chief is discrediting himself…

The police chief was saying there has been no harm. Nobody’s been hurt. We’ve had some minor delays with police, firefighters, and ambulances traversing the streets but no harm resulting from it. Nobody’s been assaulted. Nobody has been injured. Chief Sloly said this on tape. And so, the police chief says that, but then he also says at a different time, he will say these protesters are dangerous and the situation’s volatile there is unlawful conduct. There is illegal behavior. Aside from the possible parking infraction or a traffic ticket, what danger?

On the path forward, which direction might this go from here…

One thing that’s optimistic was that there’s a Liberal member of parliament who publicly said that we need to bring an end to the mandates. That is hugely significant. We’ve had some opposition members say it not that often, but there’s been some Conservative party members who have publicly spoken out against these violations of our Charter freedoms. Erin O’Toole was not one of them, but it’s one thing of the opposition. When you have a member of parliament, who’s a member of the government caucus standing publicly who wasn’t necessarily a fan of the Freedom Convoy. He stated in a press briefing that he thought they’d made their point. They should go home now. But he also said these mandates have got to end. That’s very significant. Now others may have the courage to be the second and third and fourth people.
